In the fashion industry there is something referred to as "right of first publication". What that means (basically) is that if you shoot an editorial for a magazine, you are not allowed to post the images anywhere until the magazine has posted them. No Facebook, No blog, No Website until the magazine has reached print (or published online).
Sometimes, however, it takes a long time for an editorial to come out. First, publications usually work 2-3 months in advance. Then the publication might decide that they'd like it to run in a different issue (pushing it back 4-6 months from when it was shot). If you are shopping around for magazines it might take you a while to find the images a home. Add it all up, and you might be waiting 'forever' to put your favorite images in your portfolio!
This is one of the editorials. I took these images nearly 1 year ago with an excellent creative team. I worked with my good friend and amazing stylist Lisa Smith Craig from 4 Season Style Management. She always pulls incredible clothing and she is up for any challenge. In this instance I said I wanted to invoke the idea of religious struggle (religion as well as warrior) through the styling, makeup and photoshop techniques.
Usually with a shoot I have a general idea of what I want for the visuals and put together a 'mood board'. This 'mood board' helps give creative direction to hair, makeup, wardrobe and model. I had a bit more of a refined vision of this shoot. I had been thinking a lot about how religion plays a role in the lives of people in NYC and other liberal cities. Perhaps you grew up with religion as an essential part of your life, practice and moral code. Yet in a liberal society, your life may be living 'at odds' with many of the values that were ingrained in your heart and mind. For example, I have several friends who are gay (or LGBT) but still hold strong to their religious beliefs. How does one's way of life balance out with religious beliefs we may hold? Can the two coexist in a modern society? What internal battles must we fight to make them coexist? This is where the idea of religion, battles and warrior was born from.

In this shoot I wanted to invoke the idea of thought, mystery and uncertainty, and therefore I shot the editorial with a Lensbaby composer.
